Who Are We

The Solentiname, Nicaragua Friendship Group of Western Massachusetts, was
formed in August, 1999, by Dr. John Brentlinger, one of the North Americans
who began visiting Nicaragua in the 1980’s, and author of THE BEST OF WHAT WE
ARE: REFLECTIONS ON THE NICARAGUAN REVOLUTION. The group’s mission is “…to
reach out to the people of Solentiname in friendship and support. Using the
expertise of each group member, we are establishing a reciprocal relationship
with the goal of improving the quality of life of both participants in the
U.S. and Nicaragua.”

Our group organizes art exhibits of the work of the Solentiname
artists and craftspersons, and we participate in trips and work brigades on
the islands. Our work is in the areas of education, culture, and health.
In March 1997, a group of Solentiname artists held a conference to assess
the needs of their community, resulting in a plan for integral artistic and
community development, including education, health care, sustainable
agriculture, alternative energy, ecotourism. The Solentiname Friendship
Group has worked in partnership with the people o Solentiname to achieve
these goals.
